Parents are gearing up for a school bus strike this week the Schools Chancellor says seems inevitable, and bus companies are responding to the strike threat by threatening legal action.

The bus companies have joined forces as the New York City School Bus Coalition. They say they will seek an injunction from the National Labor Relations Board and civil damages if the drivers walk off the job.

Some drivers and matrons tell NY1 they're hearing the union will make an announcement today calling a strike for Wednesday.

So far, the only thing the union is saying publicly is that it would give 24 hours notice before a strike.

But lawyers for the bus companies say they have proof a strike is imminent.

They say a flyer from the union outlines some dos and donts for striking members. Among other things, the flyer urges members to picket peacefully, stay on public property, and not to threaten anyone or do anything that could provoke an arrest.

The strike talk began after the city put bus contracts out to bid and the Amalgamated Transit Union demanded job protections for some workers.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says the state's highest court ruled the city can't give those protections.

"This is a strike against our children. It is illegal as far as what they're asking us to do and they are hurting our most vulnerable children and it is totally unacceptable," Walcott said.

The AFL-CIO and the New York City Central Labor Council are trying to poke some holes in the Department of Education's claims.

They say in the past the city defended the cost and the legality of including the Employee Protection Provision in contracts in Court.

They also say the court decision the city is citing does not apply to this situation.

Meantime, the city has a contingency plan if the strike happens.

Students who ride buses and parents of younger students would get MetroCards.

Parents who live too far from public transportation would be reimbursed if they drive their kids.

After-school programs would continue, but field trips would be canceled.
